Can I run Tapedrive without Solana?
Yes. Run Tapedrive entirely on infrastructure you operate, or use the open network without managing the underlying machines.
What are tapes and tracks?
A tape is a capacity- and time-bound storage container. A track is one piece of data stored inside a tape. Each track has its own address, so people, applications, and tools can retrieve it.
What happens when a tape expires?
Tapes reserve capacity for a defined period. Extend the tape before it expires to keep the data live; after expiry, continued storage on the open network is no longer guaranteed.
Can data on Tapedrive be private or encrypted?
Yes. Private tracks require authorization before storage nodes share their slices. Encryption is a separate layer for confidentiality and is encouraged when storing sensitive data on the open network.
How is running Tapedrive myself different from using the open network?
A self-hosted deployment puts the control plane and storage nodes on infrastructure you operate. The open network lets you reserve distributed capacity without running those machines, while keeping the same object model and familiar interfaces.
